What is...
window cleaning insurance?
Nothing is worse than cracking a window when doing a job, but it can still happen even if you have the best skills and equipment.
Using harsh chemicals and working from a height can also cause accidents or damage. That’s why it’s best to have your back covered with window cleaning insurance should the worst ever happen.
Whether you are self-employed or have a window cleaning business, insurance can help when things go wrong, helps provides a financial safety net, and gives peace of mind as you go about your jobs.
Why do window cleaners need insurance?
The nature of window cleaning comes with risks for you and your clients, so it’s important you have the right cover in place. Some possible pitfalls include:
- When cleaning, you accidentally break a client’s window
- You fall from a height and injure yourself while working
- An employee gets injured on the job
- Chemicals you use cause permanent damage
- A fire causes material damage and disrupts your business operations
You might find some of your clients insist on you having the right insurance before working with you, if you’re self-employed or contracted. Having the right cover in place can be essential for securing work.
What insurance do window cleaners need?
Policies will vary per provider, and terms and conditions apply, so always check the small print in your policy wording to see what’s included and excluded. Your insurance package could include:

Public liability insurance

Employers’ liability insurance
Tool or machinery insurance
How much does window cleaner’s insurance cost?
Window cleaner insurance could cost from 23p a day*
Your actual price for window cleaning insurance depends on your requirements. This is because your business is unique, and prices depend on a number of factors, including:
- Extent of cover — The more cover you opt for, the more expensive your package will likely be.
- Your insurer — Depending on who is willing to insure you, the price for their policies will vary.
- The type of work — Working from a height may seem riskier to insurers
- Location — The location of your business is taken into consideration when calculating the cost of your premiums.
- Claims history — If you’ve made a previous claim on your policy or had claims made against you, it may affect your future premiums.
Start an insurance quote online with Bionic and a member of our insurance team will answer any questions and help arrange cover.
*This price is for a trades and professions policy – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £84.20 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £7.02 a month or £0.23 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary on your buisness requirements.
Do you need insurance if you’re a self-employed?
If you are carrying out cleaning as a business activity then you should ensure you have the right insurance in place.
Public liability insurance is key to help protect yourself and your business if you have to pay compensation after a claim against you.
Some clients may also refuse to work with you if you don’t have the right insurance. You might even be asked to show proof of public liability insurance before securing new work.

Window Cleaning FAQs
I have a van - do I need to insure that, too?
If you have a van that is used for business purposes, you’ll need to arrange separate business vehicle insurance in addition to your window cleaning insurance with Bionic. This will protect you from accidents, theft and damage while you drive to and from jobs. Unfortunately, at Bionic, we cannot arrange business vehicle insurance.
Do you need insurance for high-rise or water-fed poles?
Water-fed poles and extensions can be expensive investments, as can standard high-rise equipment for traditional window cleaning. In both cases, you should consider business insurance to help protect them. We can help tailor your insurance package to your unique needs.
Taking out additional cover for high-rise or water-fed poles might put up the price of your cover but could be well worth the extra money if you need to claim from your insurer.
As a minimum, it’s worth considering public liability, tool and machinery cover, and employers’ liability as part of your business insurance package.
