What is...
nail technician insurance?
Nail technician insurance can act as your safety net while you work your magic on your clients. Whether you’re a mobile artist visiting homes, a freelancer taking appointments or renting a chair in a salon, nail technician insurance is key.
It can help protect against unexpected claims that can crop up during your daily treatments, giving you peace of mind to focus on creating beautiful nails.
With cover tailored to fit your specific needs, you can concentrate on your craft, knowing you have cover in place.
What types of nail technicians need insurance?
No matter how you operate, you should consider having the right insurance in place. Because anything can go wrong — a customer could slip and trip in your salon or you could injure a client during treatment.
But what types of nail techs need insurance?
- Mobile nail techs — If you travel to your clients, you’ll need insurance to help protect you while you’re on the go, covering potential risks associated with providing services at different locations.
- Freelance nail techs — As a self-employed nail technician, you’ll need insurance to help safeguard against claims from clients, providing protection wherever you work.
- Salon-based nail techs — If you’re part of a salon team, your employer may have some cover, but it’s wise to consider your own public liability insurance to protect you. If you’re self-employed and rent a chair in a salon, then you should also think about taking out public liability. If you’re a salon owner, then you should consider a salon insurance package.
Why do nail technicians need insurance?
Having the right insurance in place is key for nail technicians as you could have to pay out hefty legal fees and compensation if something goes wrong like:
- A client claims a manicure caused an infection
- Injury as a result of treatment you’ve carried out
- Someone steals your expensive nail tools and equipment.
Nail technician insurance can help cover your losses if a claim is made against you.
What does nail technician insurance cover?
Policies will vary per provider, and terms and conditions apply, so always check the small print in your policy wording to see what’s included and excluded. Your insurance package could include:

Employers’ liability insurance

Public liability insurance
Professional indemnity insurance
Product liability insurance
Business equipment insurance

Why is nail technician insurance important?
No matter where or how you run your business, having nail technician insurance is essential for helping to protect your business and your livelihood. It gives you peace of mind knowing that you’re covered against unexpected incidents, like someone stealing your expensive equipment, allowing you to focus on providing excellent service to your clients.
Plus, some clients or salons may require proof of insurance before hiring you, making it vital for securing new business.
How much is nail technician insurance?
Prices could start from around 23p per day*.
But because your business is unique, your price depends on a number of factors, including:
- Extent of cover — The more cover you opt for, the more expensive your package will likely be.
- Your insurer — Insurer appetite will vary, and therefore different insurers will offer different prices for their policies.
- Location — The location of your business is taken into consideration when calculating the cost of your premiums.
- Claims history — If you’ve made a previous claim on your policy or had claims made against you, it may affect your future premiums.
*This price is for a trades and professions policy – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £84.20 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £7.02 a month or £0.23 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary depending on your business requirements.
Do students or trainees need insurance?
Even if you’re a trainee helping out salon or doing an apprenticeship, you still need to think about public liability insurance, especially if you’re practicing and helping out clients with treatments.
If you are a salon owner and employ trainees, you must tell your broker you have students or apprentices working for you to ensure you’re correctly covered. Some insurers may have certain guidelines you need to follow to keep your insurance valid - like telling the client that the trainees are helping out with their treatments.
Terms and conditions vary per insurer and always refer to your policy wording for details.

FAQs
Can a client sue you for not liking a design?
It’s unlikely a client will be able to make a claim just for simply not liking the work you’ve carried out, such as nail designs. But if you have damaged their nails and caused injury, there could be grounds for a claim against you.
Do you legally need insurance as a nail technician?
If you are self-employed, then, legally, you don’t need any other insurance apart from business vehicle insurance if you drive about for work purposes. But if you employ anyone , you’ll need to take out employers’ liability.
