What is...
plumbers’ insurance?
Working with water systems and pipes in client’s homes comes with risk. You might accidentally damage a customer’s home causing damage. A subcontractor might injure themselves while working for you.
If you employ anyone, you have to have employers' liability insurance. There are endless possibilities in the plumbing business. That’s why it’s best to have your back covered should the worst ever happen.
Plumbers' insurance can help protect against unforeseen events and provides peace of mind so you can focus on what’s most important — your business and your customers.
Why is plumbers insurance important?
Because plumbers work in homes, businesses and other people’s property, there is a risk of damage. Having public liability insurance should be considered as part of your insurance as it helps protect you against accidents that may arise on the job. For example:
- You could accidentally break a pipe in a client’s property
- You could fall from a height, injuring yourself, employees or a member of the public
Some clients may insist on having the right insurance before starting a job so it’s essential for securing new trade.
Who is covered by plumber insurance?
We can offer traditional plumbers who work with water systems, but we can also cover you if you offer the following:
- Gas fitting services
- Heating services
- Ventilation services
What type of insurance can plumbers get?
Policies will vary per provider, and terms and conditions apply, so always check the small print in your policy wording to see what’s included and excluded. Your insurance package could include:

Public liability insurance

Employers’ liability insurance
Tool or machinery insurance
Personal accident cover

How much does plumber insurance cost?
Plumber insurance could cost from 23p a day*
Your actual price for plumber insurance depends on your requirements. This is because your business is unique, and prices depend on a number of factors, including:
- Extent of cover — The more cover you opt for, the more expensive your package will likely be.
- Your insurer — Depending on who is willing to insure you, the price for their policies will vary.
- Location — The location of your business is taken into consideration when calculating the cost of your premiums.
- Claims history — If you’ve made a previous claim on your policy or had claims made against you, it may affect your future premiums.

Plumbers Insurance FAQs
Do you need tools insurance?
Your tools are likely to be expensive and attractive to thieves. Tool insurance protects against theft and damage, so you won’t need to pay out for replacements.
Can I get cover for my employees?
Yes, if you have employees, employers' liability insurance is a legal requirement. It applies to almost all types of employees, including full-time, part-time, temporary, apprentices or volunteers.
Are there optional extras for plumber’s insurance?
You may want additional protection that is not included as standard. For example:
- Professional indemnity insurance - If you give out professional advice, such as plans for a water heating system, you could consider this, as clients may make a claim against you for negligence.
- Business equipment insurance - If you store supplies and equipment and want to protect them from theft, this insurance can offer extra protection.
What insurance do I need if I’m a plumbing sub-contractor?
If it’s only you, then employee’s liability insurance is not needed. But, if you bring anyone else on the job, including staff or even apprentices, then you’ll need to take out employers’ liability insurance. If you don’t, you’ll be breaking the law.
Although not a legal requirement, as a sub-contractor you could consider taking out public liability insurance, even if you’re working for someone else - you could still be liable if something were to happen as a result of your work.
Can you adjust your cover as your business grows?
Yes, if your business changes in any way you should inform your broker and/or insurer and they will adjust your policy to reflect business changes. If you don’t inform them, you risk being underinsured and potentially unprotected.
