What is...

salon insurance?

Nail treatments, hair appointments and even massages come with risks for your staff and your customers. Sharp tools and heated equipment can cause cuts and burns, while lotions, styling products or techniques could cause harm. That’s why it’s best to have your back covered, just in case the worst should ever happen.

Having sufficient cover helps protect you when things go wrong and could save you a lot of money if a claim is made against you or you need to make a claim.

Salon insurance can protect your premises, your employees and your customers and provides peace of mind so you can focus on what’s most important — treating your customers.

Who needs beauty salon insurance?

  • Hair, nail and beauty salons — If you own a business that carries out treatments and procedures on customers like spray tans and gel infills to more invasive treatments like microblading and highlights, you should consider this cover.
  • Mobile salon businesses — If you own a mobile business, you’ll still need insurance to cover your back. For example, you tear someone’s nail bed during an acrylic treatment, or you scrape someone’s ear during a haircut, and they make a claim against you.
  • Home beauty businesses - Even if you operate at home, your home acts as your business’s front, and you’ll need insurance — especially if someone injures themselves in your home.

Do you need insurance for different treatments?

Eyebrow tints, threading, waxing and sunbeds all come with different risks; that’s why it’s important your salon policy covers all the different treatments you sell. Your salon policy could include a combination of cover for the following treatments:

  • Eyelash extensions, lash lifts and tints
  • Brow tints, brow lamination, brow threading and henna brows
  • Skin treatments such as dermaplaning, microdermabrasion and microblading
  • All manicure and pedicure treatments
  • Spray tanning and sunbeds
  • Facials and massages
  • Hair cuts, colours and blow drys
  • Waxing

If your beauty salon performs treatments that pierce the skin (with the exception of stud-gun ear piercings!) then you’re likely to have fewer insurers offering you a quote. This type of treatment is known as “invasive beauty” and often requires more specialist insurance due to the additional risk involved in the type of treatment. Our insurance team will be able to help find you a specialist insurer if needed.

Do you need separate insurance for students?

As a salon owner, you might have training beauty therapists or apprentices working for you, and they need to be covered by your policy. So, you must tell your insurer/broker you have students working in your salon so the right cover can be arranged.

Keep in mind your policy will only be valid if you and your trainees stick to the following:

  • They only offer treatments or therapies they can do and have been professionally trained for
  • They must be under regular supervision by a qualified therapist

Policies will vary per provider, and terms and conditions apply, so always check the small print in your policy wording to see their requirements.

How much is salon insurance?

Prices could start from around 35p per day*

But no two insurers are the same and the following will affect the price of your premiums:

  • Extent of cover - The more cover you opt for, the more expensive your package is likely to be.
  • Your insurer - The insurer you choose will also influence costs.
  • Business activities - The type of services your salon offers will play a big part in determining the scope of your cover, influencing costs.
  • Location  – Where you are located is taken into consideration when calculating the price of your premiums.
  • Claims history - Whether or not you’ve had claims made against you or you have made previous claims may affect your future premiums.

*This price is for a salon customer – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £280.29 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £23.36 a month or £0.35 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual price and policy may vary depending on your business requirements.

Salon Insurance FAQs

To help you understand more about salon insurance, here are the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.

What’s included in a beauty insurance policy as standard?

In a standard beauty salon insurance policy, you can expect insurance cover for:

  • Public liability
  • Product liability
  • Treatment risk
  • Stock and contents
  • Business interruption
  • Legal expenses

Policies vary per insurer, always check your policy wording to see what is and isn’t included.

Do you offer public liability insurance for hairdressers?

Yes, we offer tailored public liability insurance designed salons, including hairdressers. Our policies cover a range of risks, including claims for injury or property damage caused to clients or third parties during the course of your work.

What kind of excess can you expect?

An excess is an amount of money you pay towards any claim you make on your insurance.

For example, if your excess is £100 and you make a claim worth £1000, your payout will be a maximum of £900.

Different policies have different levels of excess. If you choose to pay a higher excess, it’s likely to cover more costs, which could lead to a lower insurance premium in some cases.

How many employees can you cover?

Your salon insurance package can be tailored to cover all your employees. Speak to the insurance team at Bionic today, who can help you find the right insurance provider.

Is insurance necessary for home-based salons?

Yes, insurance should still be a consideration for home-based salons. It helps protect you from client injuries or property damage. If you treat clients at home, your standard home insurance policy is unlikely to cover salon-related incidents. A tailored salon insurance policy ensures you have the right protection in place, giving you peace of mind to focus on your business.

What happens if I forget to renew my policy?

If you forget to renew your policy, you may find yourself uninsured, leaving your business exposed to risks. Any claims made during a lapse in coverage would not be covered, potentially resulting in significant financial loss. To avoid this, we offer automatic renewal options to our customers, speak to a member of our insurance team to find out more.
