What is...
fish and chip shop insurance?
Running a fish and chip shop is all about serving up delicious meals and keeping your customers satisfied. But what happens when things don’t go as planned?
Fish and chip shop insurance is a special type of cover designed just for your business. It’s there to protect you from all sorts of risks that come with running a chippy, like employee injury or a customer suffering an injury.
With the right insurance, you can focus on what you do best — serving up crispy fish and golden chips to your customers.
Why do fish and chip shops need insurance?
Having the right insurance in place is key for fish and chip shops as you could have to pay out hefty legal fees, compensation, or suffer financial losses if something goes wrong like:
- A customer claims they got food poisoning
- A fryer catches fire and damages your kitchen
- A customer slips on a wet floor and gets injured
- Your stock spoils due to a power outage
- An employee burns themselves on a grill
Fish and chip shop insurance helps cover your losses if a claim is made against you or if you need to make a claim.
What does fish and chip shop insurance cover?
An insurance package for fish and chip shops could include some of the covers below. Policies will vary per provider, and limits and exclusions apply. Always refer to your policy wording for details:
Public liability insurance

Employers’ liability insurance

Business interruption insurance
Business equipment insurance

How much does fish and chip shop cover cost?
Prices could start from around £2.33 per day*.
All fish and chip shops are different, your actual price depends on a number of factors, including:
- Extent of cover — The more cover you opt for, the more expensive your package will likely be.
- Your insurer — Depending on the insurer you go with, the price will vary.
- Location — The location of your business is taken into consideration when calculating the cost of your premiums.
- Claims history — If you’ve made a previous claim on your policy or had claims made against you, it may affect your future premiums.
Costs are tailored to your circumstances, so it’s important to compare options and choose the right level of cover for your business.
*This price is for a fish and chip shop customer – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £847.80 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £70.65 a month or £2.33 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary depending on your business requirements.
Do you need a separate cover for deep-fat fryers?
Most policies cover deep-fat fryers under equipment insurance, but you should tell your broker if you use deep fat fryers to make sure you’re sufficiently covered.
Can you get cover for multiple premises?
Yes, if you have multiple fish and chip shops, speak to a broker to arrange the right policies for each of your shops.
Are you covered for takeaway delivery drivers?
We can cover the food being delivered by the takeaway driver, but the driver must hold their own public liability and business vehicle insurance.
