What is...
restaurant insurance?
Any customer-facing business comes with risk, especially when preparing and serving food and drinks in a busy restaurant. Imagine if a kitchen fire broke out or an employee burned a customer by spilling hot food down them – there are endless possibilities in a restaurant.
That’s why it’s best to have your business covered should the worst ever happen.
Insurance cover for restaurants helps provide a financial safety net, protects against unforeseen events and provides peace of mind so you can focus on what’s most important — running your restaurant business.
Why is restaurant insurance important to have?
The nature of running a small restaurant business comes with lots of risks for you and your customers. For example:
- Food poisoning from the food you’ve provided
- Accidental fires caused by fryers
- Slips on greasy or wet floors, causing injury
Not only do you need cover to protect your staff, but also your customers, your premises and your bank account as you could face hefty legal fees should the worst happen. Without sufficient business insurance for a restaurant, you could end up paying out of your own pocket if someone makes a claim against your business.
What type of insurance cover do restaurants need?
Policies will vary per provider, and terms and conditions apply, so always check the small print in your policy wording to see what’s included and excluded. Your restaurant insurance package could include:

Public liability insurance
Product liability insurance

Employers’ liability insurance
Building Insurance

Stock and contents insurance
Tenant’s improvements
Business interruption insurance

What does restaurant insurance NOT cover?
This really depends on the insurance covers you take out, but even if you have sufficient coverage, not all events may be covered, including:
- Deliberate acts that lead to illness or injury
- Deliberate acts that lead to fire or theft
Always refer to your policy wording to see what’s included and excluded.
How much does restaurant insurance cover cost?
Prices could start from around £2.01 per day*.
But no two insurers are the same, and the following may affect the price of your premiums:
- Type of restaurant - The type of restaurant you run may affect the cost of your premiums. For example, a fine dining restaurant may have different risks compared to a curry house, affecting how much you might pay.
- Where your business is located – Having a business in an area with high crime rates or a history of claims may lead to higher premiums.
- Extent of cover - The more additional cover you opt for, the more expensive it’s likely to be.
- Your claims history - A history of many or large claims could increase your insurance premiums. Insurers may view your business as a higher risk, which may lead to increased costs for cover.
Because every restaurant is unique, it's best to speak to a broker to find out your restaurant insurance costs. Start a quote online and get in touch with a member of our insurance team to find out how much you’re looking at paying for an annual restaurant insurance policy.
*This price is for a restaurant customer – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £733.17 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £60.11 a month or £2.01 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary depending on your business requirements.
How you could reduce restaurant insurance costs
Insurance can be a big expense for small restaurant businesses. But, there are several ways you could lower your premiums without compromising on the protection your business needs. Here are some ways you may reduce the cost of your business insurance:
- Safety and security features - Installing safety and security measures such as fire alarms, extinguishers, CCTV and secure locks could help protect your premises and may reduce the likelihood of claims for theft, fire or damage.
- Compare quotes each year - Insurance costs can vary between providers. Comparing restaurant insurance quotes using a comparison site, like Bionic, each year may help you ensure you’re not paying more than necessary for coverage.
- Use an insurance broker - Our insurance brokers can help you compare cover options and find competitive prices from our panel of trusted insurers.
When would restaurant insurance help cover you?
With cover in place, your business could be protected from claims made in many situations, for example:
- An employee slips and burns their hand on a hob
- A waiter spills scalding soup on a customer, causing an injury
- A customer with a peanut allergy suffers a reaction to food they were told was safe to consume
- Your restaurant suffers a flood, and you can’t operate
As every insurer is different, always refer to your policy wording for details of what’s included.

Restaurant Insurance FAQs
Do you need cover for staff?
Yes, if you have employees, it’s a legal requirement to have employers' liability insurance as a minimum.
Do restaurants need cover for deep-fat fryers?
You need to tell your broker if you have deep-fat fryers in your kitchen so they can make sure they offer you the right package.
Deep-fat fryers come with an extra fire risk so it’s important your policies cover you in case something happens. For example, someone accidentally leaves some food in the fryer and it catches on fire.
Our knowledgeable insurance team will be able to make sure your policies include cover for any risks that come with using fat fryers.
Will you be covered for food poisoning with restaurant insurance?
Public liability insurance should cover you if someone suffers food poisoning at your restaurant as a result of consuming food you’ve given them. A public liability insurance policy normally comes as standard with a restaurant insurance package, but it’s always best to double-check.
Do restaurants need an alcohol license?
An alcohol license is different from business insurance. If you sell alcohol on your restaurant menu then you’ll need to get a premises license so you're legally allowed to serve it. You or a dedicated employee must also hold a personal license in order to sell it. Read more about business licenses here or visit the government site to apply for one.
