Why compare...
business gas prices?
When it comes to business gas, loyalty doesn’t always pay - so it rarely makes sense to stick with the same business gas supplier. Here are three good reasons why thousands of businesses compare business gas prices and switch suppliers with Bionic:
- No out-of-contract rates - If your business gas bill suddenly costs you more, you might be paying out-of-contract rates. Switching sooner rather than later means you could shave money off your monthly gas bill. And if you really don’t want to switch, we might be able to do some of the heavy lifting and negotiate with your current supplier.
- Pay less for longer - We don’t just look at price - we consider what’s best for your business. Sometimes locking in a lower rate for a longer term is the best option, giving you peace of mind for several years in an unpredictable market.
- Trusted suppliers – No one wants the hassle of their gas supplier going bust. We work with a panel of trusted suppliers who offer a reliable service along with great rates. We’ll guide you through the switch so you can put more time into running your business.

How are business gas bills calculated?
Unit rate
Measured in kilowatt hours (kWh), this is the amount you pay for each unit of gas your business uses. If you're on a fixed tariff, this is the bit that stays the same for the length of your contract.
Standing charge
This is a daily amount that is charged regardless of whether or not you use any gas. It covers the cost of managing your service and delivering gas to your premises.

Who supplies my business gas?
It can be easy to lose track of who supplies your business gas, especially if you're on a three-year fix and don't need to think about things until your contract is up for renewal.
Checking your latest bill or emails is the simplest way to find out who your supplier is, or you can call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 6081524 or use the Find My Supplier website. If using either of these services, you'll need to have your meter point reference number (MPRN) to hand. Learn more in our guide to MPAN and MPRN numbers.
If you've switched with Bionic, you can give us a call, and we'll let you know who your current supplier is and compare quotes for your next contract if the time is right. At Bionic, we work with a panel of business gas suppliers, including:
| Supplier name | Gas unit rate (kWh) | Gas standing charge (daily) | Ready to switch? |
| British Gas | 7.7p | 56.9p | Compare rates now |

Note: Prices are correct as of April, 2026. Rates and bill size may vary according to your meter type and business location. The prices you’re quoted may be different from the averages shown. The figures shown are unit rates and standing charges received by Bionic from our panel of suppliers from April 1 to April 6, 2026, based on an average gas consumption of 22,223 kWh per year and an average electricity consumption of 9,234 kWh per year.
We can also compare rates from other suppliers not listed above, including Crown Gas & Power, SSE, Corona, Engie, npower Business Services, and more.
If you can't find a recent gas bill, you can find out who your supplier is at the Meter Point Administration Service online search tool. Enter your address, and it should let you know who currently supplies your gas.
You can also call the meter number helpline on 0870 608 1524. Provide your postcode and the first line of your address, and they'll tell you who your gas supplier is. This nationwide helpline costs 7p per minute.
If your business uses more than 65,000 kWh of gas a year, suppliers will classify you as a large business and handle your supply differently. To find out more, check out our guide to large business energy.
How much gas do businesses use in a year?
If your gas bills are too high, an overpriced tariff might not be the only reason - you might simply be using too much. This could be down to bad habits - such as leaving the heating on too high - or the fact that your business premises aren't as energy efficient as they should be.
To give you a rough idea of how much gas you should be using, here are the average annual gas consumption figures SMEs:
- A microbusiness is one that has less than 10 employees and an annual turnover under €2 million. Microbusinesses use an average of 10,000 kWh of gas a year. Find out more in our guide to micro businesses energy.
- A small business has less than 50 employees and an annual turnover under €10 million. Small businesses use an average of 25,000 kWh of gas a year. Find out more in our guide to UK small businesses.
- A medium-sized business has less than 250 employees and an annual turnover under €50 million. Medium-sized businesses use an average of 45,000 kWh of gas a year.
For more information, check out our guide to average business energy consumption. If you use more than the above, see our guide to industrial, high-consumption, and large business energy.

Business Gas FAQs
What if I can't find the answer to my question in these FAQs?

Where can I find my MPRN?
MPRN is a unique number for your gas meter. It will be up to 11 numbers in length and is used to identify the meter at your business premises.
You should be able to find your MPRN on your business gas bill under the "Details of charges" heading.
You can also search online for your MPRN by entering your postcode at Find My Supplier or by calling the meter number helpline on 0870 608 1524. Simply tell them your business postcode and the first line of your address and they’ll let you know your MPRN and the name of your current gas supplier.
Will my business gas meter need to be replaced if I switch supplier?
It’s unlikely that your gas meter will need replacing if it’s a standard meter. If you have a smart meter, you may need to switch meters if the one you have isn’t compatible with your new supplier. For more information, check out our guide to smart meters for business.
How much VAT do I pay on gas for business?
Most businesses pay the standard 20% VAT on gas, but you might qualify for the lower 5% rate if you run a charity or not-for-profit organisation. You might also qualify for a discount if you use less than 4,397kWh each month – if you’re not sure how much you use, you can find the exact figure on your latest bill.
If you qualify for the lower rate, ask your gas supplier for a VAT declaration form. Find out more about VAT and business energy in our guide to VAT for business gas and electricity.
Can I switch suppliers if my business gas is supplied by an independent gas transporter (IGT)?
Even if your gas is supplied by an IGT, there’s nothing stopping you from comparing gas prices and switching suppliers, but you might find your switch takes a bit longer and the deal you’re offered might not be as competitive as others.
This is because the costs involved in supplying and maintaining IGTs are relatively high, which means the standing charge is often higher. And when you compare gas quotes, the extra IGT charges won’t be included, so you’ll also have to factor these costs in on top of the rates you’re offered. It’s important to compare deals from a range of suppliers, as you might find some of the bigger providers will take on the IGT charges to get your custom.
What are the best business gas deals currently available?
Business gas prices are always changing. The only way to make sure you’re on the best deal is to compare prices and switch. And remember, signing up to a new deal as soon as your switching window opens can help you lock in lower rates and beat any energy price rises.
