What is...
cafe insurance?
If something goes wrong at your cafe or coffee shop, say an employee burns themselves on a hot plate or a customer slips on a wet floor, you could be held responsible. Cafe insurance could cover your business for the cost of any claims made against you or if you need to claim.
It’s also a good idea to make sure your cafe insurance covers your stock and equipment against theft or damage.
Why do you need cafe insurance?
The nature of running a cafe comes with risks for you, your customers and your bank account, so it’s important to get fully insured against these risks.
- A customer gets food poisoning from food you’ve served.
- Accidental fires caused by fryers, ovens or hobs.
- A customer slips on a greasy floor and injures themselves.
If you have any employees or any volunteers, you need to take out employers' liability insurance by law.

How much does cafe & coffee shop insurance cost?
Prices could start from around 98p per day*.
The cost of your annual cafe insurance varies based on several factors unique to your business. Costs are based on:
- The insurer you choose
- The level of coverage you need
- Where your business is located
- Business size
- Claims history
The cost of cafe insurance can be different for every business because no two cafes are exactly the same. A small takeaway coffee shop may pay less than a bustling city centre cafe with seating, kitchen facilities and several staff members.
Cafes with good health and safety practices, clean kitchens and fewer past claims may pay less. If your business has had any previous claims, your cafe insurance cost may be higher because some insurers may see your business as more of a risk.
Every cafe is different, so the best way to understand how much you’ll pay is to compare quotes from a panel. To find out your exact cafe insurance costs, speak to a member of our UK-based insurance team.
*This price is for a cafe or coffee shop customer – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £355.48 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £29.62 a month or £0.98 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary based on your business requirements.
How can I get a lower cafe insurance quote?
To try and get a lower cafe insurance quote, it helps to show insurers that your premises are well run and low risk. Here are some simple steps that could help reduce your cafe insurance quote:
- Keep kitchens clean and safe
- Train staff properly
- Look after your equipment
- Prevent accidents
- Record incidents
- Compare insurance quotes
- Check and review your cover regularly
- Choose a comprehensive cafe insurance package

Cafe Insurance FAQs
Are there any optional extras available with cafe insurance?
Just like every insurer is different, so are the varying levels of cover on offer. You might find you need different cover from your competitor down the road, or a bigger chain, depending on the size and nature of your cafe or coffee shop.
For example. you may want cyber insurance to protect your customer data. If you’re not sure what extra cover is available to you, then it’s best to speak to your broker who can support you in selecting any additional covers that your business may require.
What if I serve alcohol at my cafe?
If you serve alcohol, you’ll need to take out a public liability policy. This can be arranged if you speak to your broker.
But in order to sell alcohol in the UK you need a license and at least one employee must hold a personal license. This is not the same as business insurance and is something you need to arrange separately with the UK government. Read more about business licenses.
Do I need insurance for a mobile coffee stall?
If you have market stall or attend events with a mobile coffee stall then you’ll still need to think about insurance. It’s best to speak to your broker to arrange the right level of cover for any trading off-site.
Is insurance a legal requirement for cafes?
The only insurance that’s a legal requirement is employees’ liability insurance, this applies if you have any employees. Many other types of cover are essential for business owners, even if they’re not required by law.
Not sure what types of cover are essential for your business? Our knowledgeable insurance team are on hand to support you in selecting the right cover for your business. Start a quote online today.
Can you get insurance if you use a fryer?
Yes, you’ll just need to tell your broker so they can make sure the right cover is in place.
Using deep-fat fryers comes with an extra fire risk, so you’ll need to make sure your policies cover you in case something happens, say someone leaves fried goods in the fryer and it sets on fire, for example.
Our knowledgeable insurance team will be able to make sure your policies include cover for risks that come with using fat fryers.
