What is...
hotel insurance?
Hotel insurance is a type of business insurance designed for small hotels, guesthouses and similar accommodation providers. It consists of different types of cover on one policy to help protect your property, staff, guests and day-to-day activities.
With people coming and going every day, it’s impossible to predict when things could go wrong. A guest could slip and fall in your breakfast room, or a storm could cause damage to your property - there are so many possibilities. A hotel insurance policy is designed to help cover these risks, offering financial protection if something unexpected happens.
Hotel insurance can help protect against unforeseen events and provide peace of mind so you can focus on what’s most important - running a successful hotel business.
Why is insurance important for hotels?
Hotels deal with periods of high footfall and sometimes high expectations from guests. Hotel insurance is important because it helps protect your business from the financial impact of accidents, damage or disruptions beyond your control.
If a guest is injured on your premises, part of your building is damaged, or an incident forces you to temporarily close, the costs can quickly add up. Without insurance, these expenses may need to be paid out of pocket.
Hotel insurance also helps protects the things you rely on to run your business, such as furniture, equipment, technology and stock. With the right cover in place, it can even help to cover the loss of income if you need to temporarily stop trading due to an insured event.
What does hotel insurance cover?
From guest rooms to restaurant areas, we know every hotel has different facilities. And, just like every hotel is different, every insurer is different, and the one you choose may offer various cover types. At Bionic, we can help insure small hotels with the following facilities:
- Hotel grounds
- Guest rooms
- Bars
- Small restaurants
If your facilities are not listed, we may still be able to help. Call our knowledgeable insurance team on 0800 032 7925 to see if we can help.
What’s included in a hotel package?
Every hotel business is different, so policies will vary per provider, but a hotel insurance package could include a combination of the covers below:

Employers’ liability insurance

Public liability insurance

Commercial building insurance

Stock and contents insurance
Cover for guest belongings
How much does hotel insurance cost?
Prices could start from around £1.79 a day*
The cost of hotel insurance can be different for every hotel, depending on the size of your business, where it's located, claims history and the policy you take out. This is because each business has its own set of risks and needs.
A small hotel with few rooms will often pay less than a large hotel with many guests and extra facilities like a bar, restaurant, gym or swimming pool. Hotels with strong safety systems and fewer past claims could get lower premiums.
Because every hotel is different, the best way to find out the cost of your hotel insurance is to speak to a member of our knowledgeable insurance team.
*This price is for a hotel package – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £651.66 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £54.31 a month or £1.79 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary based on your business requirements.
How can I get lower hotel insurance quotes?
You may be able to get a cheaper hotel insurance quote by taking steps that demonstrate lower risk to insurers:
- Choose a comprehensive hotel insurance package
- Keep your premises well-maintained
- Strengthen security measures
- Provide regular training for staff
- Maintain a clean claims history
- Check and review your cover regularly

FAQs
What exclusions apply?
Depending on your business’s unique needs and the policy you take out, your exclusions will vary because every insurer is different. For full details of exclusions on your insurance policy, please refer to the policy schedule you received or ask a member of our knowledgeable insurance team.
What cover do I need if a guest is injured at my hotel?
Public liability insurance can help protect your business if a guest accidentally suffers an injury or harm when staying at your hotel. This also helps cover you for non-guests who are just visiting your property, but make sure you inform your broker that not all people visiting your hotel will be guests. For example, if you have a restaurant open to the public as well as guests. This isn't unusual, but insurers need to be aware of it.
Does hotel insurance cover damages by guests?
Guests can sometimes cause damage to your rooms or grounds. If damage is accidental and reported by the hotel guest, the hotel should be able to claim under their policy. But limits and exclusions apply, you should always check your policy wording and confirm with your broker that this cover is included.
