What is...
contractor insurance?
Whether you work with machinery, give financial advice or work in busy areas, you’re likely to run into risks.
Injuries, damage or difficult situations could arise while you work. That’s why it’s best to have your back covered to protect yourself, your clients and the public should the worst ever happen.
Insurance for contractors can help protect against unforeseen events, and can help cover the costs of compensation and legal fees should you need it. It also provides peace of mind so you can focus on your work without worries.
Why is it important contractors have insurance?
If you’re a contractor, you’re probably used to working with lots of different people often, which means you could run into issues that could cause you a headache. For example:
- A client claims your work causes damage
- A client sues you for professional negligence
- A member of the public gets injured as a result of your work
- Your expensive tools or equipment get stolen
- You injure yourself on a job
Some clients may insist you have the appropriate insurance cover before starting a job, therefore, it’s essential to have sufficient insurance to help protect yourself while working.

How much does contractors' insurance cost?
Prices could start from £4.01 a day*
It’s difficult to give a solid figure for annual insurance for contractors, as it depends on the nature of your work. Costs depend on a number of factors including:
- Extent of cover - The more coverage you choose, the more expensive your package is likely to be.
- The nature of your work - The more risks you face day to day will play a part in how expensive your premiums are. For example, working from heights is riskier than sitting at a desk.
- Location – Where you work is taken into consideration when working out the price of your premiums.
- Claims history - Whether or not you’ve had previous claims made against you or you have made previous claims may affect your future premiums.
*The price is for a contractor's combined policy – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £1459.41 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £121.62 a month or £4.01 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary depending on your business requirements.
Can your policy be void for improper tool storage?
This depends on the conditions set out by your insurer, but it doesn’t always mean your policy would be voided, although you might not be paid should you make a claim.
Insurers often set out conditions to prevent theft so you may be required to lock away your tools and equipment in a place deemed ‘safe’ and not leave them out in the open or in or in your van overnight.
Always read your policy documents carefully to make sure you’re complying with the conditions. If you don’t and you make a claim, it might not be paid out.

Contractors' Insurance FAQs
I’m a subcontractor, do I need contractor insurance?
Although not a legal requirement, as a sub-contractor it’s essential you consider taking out public liability insurance, even if you’re working for someone else. You could still be liable if something were to happen as a result of your work.
It’s not a legal requirement to have business insurance if you work alone, but you should consider it in case someone makes a claim against you or you need to make a claim.
Without the right insurance in place, you could be left to pay the price.
What insurance do you need if you have employees?
If you work alone, then employer’s liability insurance is not needed. But, if you bring anyone else on the job, including staff or even apprentices, then you’ll need to take out employers’ liability insurance. If you don’t, you’ll be breaking the law.
