What is...
sandwich shop insurance?
Running a sandwich shop is all about serving up fresh, tasty bites. But, behind the counter, there’s always the risk that something could go wrong.
From accidents to your panini press breaking down, sandwich shop insurance helps protect you when the unexpected happens. Whether you run a deli on the high street or a grab-and-go sandwich bar, tailored sandwich shop insurance makes sure that your business, staff and stock are covered.
What type of sandwich shops can you cover?
No matter how you slice it, sandwich shops come in all shops and sizes. Whether you own a:
- Highstreet deli
- Takeaway sandwich bar
- Sandwich or mobile catering unit
- Snack bars serving sandwiches alongside drinks and other foods
Bionic can help you find insurance tailored to your specific business needs.
Why do sandwich businesses need insurance?
When you’re juggling fresh ingredients, loyal customers, and a busy workday, one unexpected mishap can derail your business.
Having the right insurance in place is key for sandwich shops as you could have to pay out hefty legal fees, compensation or financial losses if something goes wrong, like:
- A customer claims they got food poisoning from a sandwich you served
- A customer slips and falls in your shop
- Your equipment is stolen
- A fire or disaster damages your shop
- Your stock of ingredients spoils due to a power outage
- An employee gets injured while working
Sandwich shop insurance helps cover your losses if a claim is made against you or if you need to make a claim.

What doesn’t it cover?
Sandwich shop insurance won’t cover everything, and some exclusions apply, such as:
- Intentional damage – Damage caused on purpose isn’t covered.
- Neglect – Not keeping up with regular maintenance or negligence in food storage could void your cover.
- General wear and tear – Normal ageing or wear on equipment and stock isn’t included.
Double-check your policy details or speak to our team if you have any questions about what’s covered and what isn’t.
How much does sandwich shop insurance cover cost?
Prices could start from around 82p per day*.
Because all sandwich shops are different, it’s difficult to give a solid figure for what you’ll be paying for this insurance without speaking to a broker. This is because your business is unique, and prices depend on a number of factors, including:
- Extent of cover — The more cover you opt for, the more expensive your package will likely be.
- Your insurer — Depending on who is willing to insure you, the price for their policies may vary.
- Location — The location of your business is taken into consideration when calculating the cost of your premiums.
- Claims history — If you’ve made a claim on your policy or had claims made against you, it may affect your future premiums.
*This price is for a shops and salons policy – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £300.23 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £25.02 a month or £0.82 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary depending on your business requirements.
Do you need cover for your building if you rent?
If you rent, your landlord is responsible for insuring the building, but you’ll need to arrange cover for anything inside the building, like your stock, equipment, and any liabilities.
Unsure? Get in touch with our insurance team today to find the right cover for you.
Do you need cover if you sell other food?
Yes, let your insurer know if you offer any additional products including alcohol, so your policy covers everything you offer.
You’ll also need to let your insurer know if you’re working with hot ovens, fryers or appliances to create hot sandwiches as this poses a different risk to employees and your building or van.

Sandwich Shop Insurance FAQs
Do you need insurance for events if you run a mobile sandwich van?
If you take your business on the move, like festivals or catering events, you’ll need specific cover for off-site events and public liability for working in different locations. At Bionic, we are able to cover static food trucks, but if you drive your van then you’ll need to arrange separate business vehicle insurance.
How quickly can you get cover?
Depending on the insurance policy and your specific business needs, you can often get cover the same day you apply.
Does insurance cover spoiled food or damaged inventory?
It’s a good idea to take out stock insurance if you have a back room full of it. Stock is often at risk of theft or damage, and sufficient stock insurance will protect you financially in the event you can’t sell it due to an insurable event.
But if you sell any ‘perishable’ stock that needs to be refrigerated or frozen, you could also take out a separate deterioration of stock policy. This could provide financial compensation in the event your equipment malfunctions and a drop in temperature causes food to spoil.
Does my policy cover events like catering or pop-up stalls?
If you provide sandwiches for events off-site like corporate parties or market stalls, we can still insure you. When speaking to a broker, it’s best to inform them of any off-site activities your business carries out so you can ensure you’re properly insured.
