What is...

photographer insurance?

When you’re busy working to get the perfect shot, insurance is probably the last thing on your mind. But, you should consider it, incase you need financial protection if things go wrong as you go about your work.

Working events with clients and the public comes with risks. Your clients may not be happy with your work, you might injure someone, or your equipment might get damaged - this can end up being costly.

Photography insurance can help you cover the costs of claims or legal fees, so you can go about your work with peace of mind.

Why do photographers need insurance?

If you’re a self-employed photographer or run a small photography business, you might be working events and dealing with customers and the public. This can lead to risks that you should protect yourself from. For example:

  • You injure yourself on a shoot or someone else
  • Someone steals your valuable camera gear
  • A fire or accident disrupts your business operations
  • You accidentally damage a venue’s property

Having the right insurance can help prevent you from having to pay out of your own pocket if a customer, employee or member of the public makes a claim against you or if you need to make a claim.

Photographer Insurance FAQs

Does photography insurance cover equipment?

If you opt for a business equipment insurance in your package, then this will help to cover your expensive equipment including cameras, lenses, tripods, lights, laptops and any other key equipment you can’t work without.

Do you need photographer insurance for events?

If you’re working events and interacting with the public when on the job, it’s a good idea to consider business insurance to help protect you if anything were to go wrong.

Do you need cover for re-shoots?

No matter the nature of your work, you should consider the right insurance. A package insurance can help cover you for a set period of time, normally a year. Therefore, you’ll be protected if you need to reshoot, travel up and down the country or carry out other normal work activities.

Do freelance photographers need insurance?

Even if you’re a freelancer or self-employed, you should still consider insurance. If someone were to make a claim against you as you go about your work, you could end up having to pay compensation out of your work pocket without adequate insurance.

What about if you own a studio?

If you also own your own studio, you should consider taking out commercial property insurance. This is something your broker can speak to you about when helping you arrange the right cover. This type of cover will protect your building in the event of fire, weather damage or other insurable events.

Do you need insurance for employees?

Yes, if you have any employees you must take out employers’ liability by law.
