What is...
mobile hairdresser insurance?
Whether you rent a hairdressing chair a few days a week, work from home or visit clients in their own homes, you’ll still need to consider insurance.
Trimming fringes, feathering layers, and bleaching all come with risks of cuts, burns, reactions or even worse injuries. Not to mention your stock and expensive equipment need protecting from damage and theft while you’re on the move.
Mobile hairdresser insurance can help protect you if a client were to claim against you or if you need to make a claim yourself, helping to provide financial protection if the worst were to happen.
Why do mobile hairdressers need insurance?
When you’re travelling to see clients and working in their houses, you’re bound to run into risks, so insurance should be a key consideration.
Working with scissors, clippers, straighteners, and other hairdressing equipment means you could accidentally cut someone’s face or damage something in their home. Unfortunately, the risks are endless, and you could run into the following:
- You accidentally injure your client
- Someone steals your valuable hairdressing tools
- You damage a client’s property while you work
What does mobile hair insurance cover?
Policies will vary per provider, and terms and conditions apply, so always check the small print in your policy wording to see what’s included and excluded. Your insurance package could include:
Public Liability Insurance
Product Liability Insurance
Stock and Contents Insurance
Business equipment cover

How much does mobile hair insurance cost?
Prices could start from around 23p a day*.
But no two insurers are the same, and what you pay depends on a number of factors, including:
- Extent of cover - The more cover you opt for, the more expensive your package is likely to be.
- Location – Where you work is taken into consideration when calculating the price of your premiums.
- Claims history - Whether or not you’ve had previous claims made against you or you have made previous claims may affect your future premiums.
*This price is for a trades and professions policy – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £84.20 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £7.02 a month or £0.23 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary depending on your business requirements.
Is mobile hairdresser cover a legal requirement?
There are only two types of insurance which a required by law in the UK in certain circumstances.
- Employers’ liability insurance - If you have employees, trainees or apprentices, you need to take out this insurance. If not, you’ll be breaking the law.
- Business vehicle insurance - If you use a vehicle for business purposes you’ll need commercial cover. For example, if you travel between clients’ houses and the warehouse.
However, other types of business insurance are still essential to protect your clients, your business and your bank account. Without the right cover, you could be paying out of your own pocket if someone makes a claim against you or you need to claim yourself.
What if I’m a sole trader?
Even if you’re a sole trader, no other types of insurance are mandatory by UK law. But this doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to go without insurance, as you risk being uninsured. Start a quote online today to see your options.

Are you covered for other treatments?
If you offer other treatments along with hairdressing we can also help you. For example, you might offer eyebrow threading, lash extensions and other beauty treatments.
It’s worth noting if you offer any invasive treatments, you’ll need a specialist insurer. The insurance team at Bionic can help you sort this out. Start a quote online today, and we’ll be on hand to help you with your specific insurance needs.
What if I use my own homemade products?
If you use your own homemade products on clients, like styling cremes – you present a bigger risk to insurers and are therefore likely to see fewer insurers when comparing quotes. Read the UK Cosmetics Regulations for more information.
Does home insurance cover mobile hairdressers?
Your existing home insurance policy is unlikely to cover you if you’re using your home for business activities. Your business equipment and stock are also unlikely to be covered in the event of flood, fire or damages from other insured events.
If you’re working on customer’s hairdos in your own home or their homes, then you should consider public liability insurance as a minimum. This will protect you against injury or damages while you carry out your work.
Can you get cover if you work in a salon as well as being mobile?
Yes, if you occasionally work in a salon that you own or rent, we can also arrange salon insurance for you.
