What is...
IT contractor insurance?
Whatever project you’re working on, as an IT contractor you're likely to run into different types of risks. You can do what you can to reduce them, but they can’t be eliminated completely.
A client could sue over incorrect professional advice you’ve given, or your expensive equipment could get stolen. Whatever the risk, it’s a good idea to have contractors’ insurance in place to help cover your back financially if anything were to go wrong.
It can help protect against unforeseen events and provides peace of mind so you can focus on getting the project done.
Why do IT contractors need insurance?
As an IT professional people rely on you for your expertise and the effects of giving the wrong advice or making an error on a project could be costly. You could run into the following issues:
- A client claims your advice led to financial loss
- Your tech equipment is stolen or damaged
- A fire or disaster damages your office or workspace
- You suffer an injury that prevents you from working
Some clients may also insist you have the right insurance before starting a job, therefore, it’s essential to have sufficient insurance for securing new trade.
What types of IT consultants can get cover?
We can help insure many different types of specialist IT contractors including (but not limited to):
- Software developers and programmers
- Systems architects and engineers
- Network administrators
- Database administrators
- IT project managers
- Cybersecurity consultants
- Cloud computing specialists
- DevOps engineers
- Technical support specialists
- Web developers and designers

What does IT contractor insurance cover?
Policies will vary per provider, and terms and conditions apply, so always check the small print in your policy wording to see what’s included and excluded. Your insurance package could include:

Public liability insurance

Professional indemnity insurance

Product liability insurance

Legal expenses insurance
Or speak to one of our team on 0800 032 7925
What isn’t covered?
You’re unlikely to be able to claim on your insurance policy for every issue you come across, similarly, there will be events where clients cannot claim against you.
Although exclusions and policy wording vary per insurer, generally, the following is not covered:
- Purposeful negligence or workmanship
- Deliberate acts
- Normal wear and tear and gradual deterioration of equipment
How much does IT contractor insurance cost?
IT contractor insurance could cost from £4.01 a day*
Your actual premium depends on your requirements. This is because your business is unique, and prices depend on a number of factors, including:
- Extent of cover - The more cover you opt for, the more expensive your package is likely to be.
- Location – Where you work is taken into consideration when working out the price of your premiums. For example, some areas have a higher likelihood of theft than others.
- Claims history - Whether or not you’ve had previous claims made against you or you have made previous claims may affect your future premiums.
Start a quote online today or get in touch with our knowledgable insurance team, who will guide you through your options.
*This price is for a contractors combined policy – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £1459.41 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £121.62 a month or £4.01 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary on your business requirements.

IT Contractor Insurance FAQs
Is past work covered?
Past work can be covered through what's called "retroactive coverage" or "prior acts of coverage", but only in certain circumstances. This protection helps consultants with claims coming out of the woodwork from work completed months or years ago. However, you need to have an existing professional indemnity policy in place for a retroactive date to be put in place.
If you're taking out a new policy and have never had any professional indemnity cover in place, then you aren't able to have retroactive coverage as there was no cover in place. You would only be covered from the start date of your policy.
In order for you to have a retroactive date to cover past work, there also needs to be no gap in cover (even for a day).
Do you need any proof of qualifications to get cover?
While formal qualifications aren't a legal requirement, some insurers may want to see evidence of your experience and certifications, including:
- Industry certifications – like AWS Certification, Microsoft, Google Cloud Certifications and others
- Years of experience
- Project portfolio
- Client testimonials
Do you need to keep client records as an IT consultant?
It's a good idea to keep client records and previous work in case you are ever involved in a claim. Keep a file of:
- Signed contracts and agreements
- Project specifications and deliverables
- Communication records
- Change requests and approvals
- Testing and implementation documentation
How quickly can you get cover?
Depending on the insurance policy and your specific business needs, you can often get cover the same day you apply.
