What is...
engineer insurance?
Whether you're developing new products, testing or building, as an engineer you’re likely to run into different types of risks. You can do what you can to reduce them, but they can’t be eliminated completely.
A client could sue over a faulty product or advice, or you could injure someone on the job. Whatever the risk, its best to have engineers’ insurance in place to help provide financial protection if you need it.
Insurance for engineers can help protect against unforeseen events and provides peace of mind so you can focus on planning, designing, building and getting the project done.
Why do engineers need insurance?
As an engineer, people rely on you for your expertise and the effects of giving the wrong advice or making an error on a project could be costly. You could run into the following issues:
- A client claims a design flaw causes structural issues
- You injure yourself while on-site
- Someone steals your valuable equipment
- You accidentally damage a client's property during a visit
- You give out incorrect professional advice
Some clients may insist you have the right insurance before starting a job, therefore, it’s essential to have sufficient insurance for securing new trade.
What kind of engineers are covered?
We can help insure many different types of specialist engineers, including (but not limited to):
- Electrical engineers
- Mechanical engineers
- Software engineers
- Technical engineers
- Building engineers
- Site engineers
- Civil engineers
- Computer engineers
- Thermal engineers
- Gas engineer
- Heating engineer

What can engineers insurance cover?
Policies will vary per provider, and terms and conditions apply, so always check the small print in your policy wording to see what’s included and excluded. Your insurance package could include:

Public liability insurance

Professional indemnity insurance
Product liability insurance
Or speak to one of our team on 0800 032 7925
What isn’t covered?
You’re unlikely to be able to claim on your insurance policy for every issue you come across, similarly, there will be events where clients cannot claim against you.
Although exclusions and policy wording vary per insurer, generally, the following is not covered:
- Purposeful negligence or workmanship
- Deliberate acts
- Normal wear and tear and gradual deterioration of equipment
How much does engineers’ insurance cost?
Engineering insurance could cost from 23p a day*
Your actual insurance premium depends on your requirements. This is because your business is unique, and prices depend on a number of factors, including:
- Extent of cover - The more cover you opt for, the more expensive your package is likely to be.
- The nature of your work - The more risks you face day to day will play a part in how expensive your premiums are. For example, working from a height is riskier than sitting behind a desk.
- Location – Where you work is taken into consideration when working out the price of your premiums. For example, some areas have a higher likelihood of theft than others.
- Claims history - Whether or not you’ve had previous claims made against you or you have made previous claims may affect your future premiums.
*This price is for a trades and professions policy – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £84.20 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £7.02 a month or £0.23 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary based on your business requirements.

FAQs
What insurance do you legally need as an engineer?
If you work alone, then employers’ liability insurance is not needed. But, if you bring anyone else on the job, including staff or even apprentices, then you’ll need to take out employers’ liability insurance. If you don’t, you’ll be breaking the law.
Do you need insurance if you’re a self-employed engineer?
Although not a legal requirement, it’s a good idea to have insurance if you’re a self-employed engineer. Why? You could end up paying hefty legal fees and compensation out of your own pocket if something were to go wrong.
Many companies or clients will refuse to work with you if you don’t have sufficient insurance in place.
Are you covered if you work abroad?
If you only do a proportion of your work abroad, we may still be able to cover you, although this varies per insurer. Always tell your broker if you work abroad or you may not be properly covered.
Can I pay in monthly instalments?
We can offer direct debit on all policies as well as payment in one lump sum.
