What is...
dog grooming insurance?
If you offer dog grooming services, it’s a good idea to have insurance. Dog owners expect the best possible care when trusting you with their beloved pet, likewise, your employees expect to be protected while working with dogs on a daily basis.
Having dog grooming insurance can help cover your business activities and equipment against damage. It can also help protect your business against flood, fire and theft – any of which could cause you to close and temporarily stop trading.
Dog grooming salon insurance can help you pay for unforeseen costs involved with claims against you so you can focus on giving the best service to happy pups.
Why is it important that dog groomers have cover?
When you run a business, there’s always a chance something could go wrong. But working with dogs comes with its set of unique challenges, and you can never predict when things could happen. For example:
- A customer slips on a wet floor, causing injury
- An employee gets injured from a dog
- A fire or flood disrupts your business operations
Having sufficient insurance means you shouldn’t need to pay out of your own pocket if a customer, employee or member of the public makes a claim against you or you need to make a claim.
Policies vary per insurer and limits and exclusions may apply. Check your policy wording for details.
What does dog grooming insurance cover?
Policies will vary per provider, and terms and conditions apply, so always check the small print in your policy wording to see what’s included and excluded. Your insurance package could include:
Public liability insurance
Employers liability insurance
Stock and contents insurance
Business equipment insurance

What doesn’t dog grooming insurance cover?
As with any insurance, there are certain exclusions and things that aren’t covered. That’s why it’s always important to check your policy to make sure you have all the cover you need.
It’s likely we can help sort insurance for your dog grooming business, but your cover won’t include:
- Business Vehicles - We’re not able to cover any vans or other vehicles used for business purposes. You should arrange this separately.
- Animal selling - If your business sells dogs or any other animals, we cannot help to insure you.
Pre-existing conditions - Your insurer may not cover animals with pre-existing conditions or injuries who are under your care.
How much does dog grooming insurance cost?
Dog grooming insurance could cost from 23p a day*
Your actual price will depend on your requirements. This is because your business is unique, and prices depend on a number of factors, including:
- Extent of cover — The more cover you opt for, the more expensive your package will likely be.
- Your insurer — Depending on who is willing to insure you, the price for their policies will vary.
- Location — The location of your business is taken into consideration when calculating the cost of your premiums.
- Claims history — If you’ve made a previous claim on your policy or had claims made against you, it may affect your future premiums.
Get in touch today to start a quote and we’ll guide you through the options.
*The price is for a trades and professions policy – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £84.20 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £7.02 a month or £0.23 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary on your buisness requirements.

Dog Grooming Insurance FAQs
Are the dogs covered in the salon?
No, we cannot provide cover for any animals, including dogs. We can help provide protection for employees, and the public against injury and damages as well as equipment protection. If you need cover that protects animals, it's best to find a specialist insurer.
Does dog grooming insurance cover injury to the groomer?
Yes, if the dog groomer is an employee, employers’ liability insurance should help cover any injury they suffer because of their work.
Similarly, if you are worried about injuring yourself at work, it’s likely your package can be tailored to include personal accident insurance. This will help with financial compensation if you are injured because of your work and can’t carry on working for a period of time. Policies vary per insurer and limits and exclusions apply. Please refer to your policy wording for details.
What if I offer grooming services for other pets?
If you offer additional pet grooming services, we can also help insure your business. For example, if you have a cat grooming business, it’s likely we can help insure the business operations and employees. It's worth noting that we cannot insure any animals against injury or damage.
Does dog grooming insurance cover owners?
A dog owner may be covered if they slip on your premises while dropping off or picking up their dog. However, it's unlikely they will be covered if they were anywhere near machinery or clippers as there would be issues with health and safety. Insurers are also unlikely to offer cover if you allow owners in treatment rooms or near machinery.
Policies vary per insurer and limits and exclusions apply. Please refer to your policy wording for details.
Is there optional cover for equipment breakdown?
Yes, if you rely on expensive equipment to run your dog grooming business - like electric tables and powerful hairdryers - you might want to insure them in case they break down. This type of insurance helps covers the costs of repairing or replacing essential equipment. But always read the policy documents to make sure it covers everything you need, and you know what the exclusions are.
Are there specific certifications or licenses required for getting sufficient cover?
There are no specific certifications or licenses required for dog groomers in the UK. But you are responsible for the wellbeing of the animals you treat so you should know all about the Animal Welfare Act and your duty of care.
It’s probably also a good idea to only use professional products like shampoos and lotions, instead of homemade concoctions. Using products that you’ve made yourself is likely to make your business more difficult to insure. You should also get to know the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health COSHH regulations and make sure you stick to them.
