What is...
construction insurance?
Construction work can be rewarding but also a risky business, so it’s a good idea to have insurance in place. Whether protecting your workers, tools, or projects, construction insurance is designed to help cover the risks that come with building, renovating, or managing construction sites.
Whether you’re a contractor, builder, or project manager – we understand your unique business needs. We’ll do the heavy lifting and compare quotes to help find tailored insurance for your business.
Construction continues to be one of the most complex and high-risk sectors according to HSE Accident & Incident Statistics. Having the right insurance could help protect your construction business from financial losses when the unexpected happens – from worker injuries to forced closures.
What types of construction trades need cover?
We can protect the majority of construction trades, including:
- Builders and contractors
- Electricians and plumbers
- Roofing and scaffolding businesses
- Civil engineers and construction consultants
- Specialist trades like tilers, plasterers, and landscapers
- Basement contractors
- Site managers and project supervisors
- Demolition contractors
- Groundwork specialists
- Bricklayers and masons
Can’t see your trade? It’s likely we can still help. Start a quote online to see if we can.
Why do construction businesses need insurance?
Construction work is high-risk, and even with the best planning, the unexpected can happen. The right construction business insurance could help cover you for situations like:
- A worker gets injured on the job site
- You accidentally damage a client's property
- Your valuable equipment is stolen or damaged
- A fire or disaster disrupts a project
With the right cover in place, you can focus on getting your project done, knowing you’re protected from the unexpected.
What does construction insurance cover?
Policies will vary per provider, and terms and conditions apply, so always check the small print in your policy wording to see what’s included and excluded. Your insurance cover could include:

Public liability insurance

Employers’ liability insurance

Professional indemnity insurance

Business interruption insurance
Business equipment insurance

How much does construction insurance cover cost?
Construction insurance could cost from 23p a day*
But all construction businesses are different, so it’s difficult to give a solid figure for what you’ll be paying without speaking to a broker. Prices depend on a number of factors, including:
- Extent of cover — The more cover you opt for, the more expensive your package will likely be.
- Your insurer — Depending on who is willing to insure you, the price for their policies will vary.
- Type of work — Higher-risk trades like roofing may face higher premiums than lower-risk work.
- Project size and complexity — Larger construction projects tend to higher insurance costs due to increased risk exposure – like working from a height
- Location — The location of your business is taken into consideration when calculating the cost of your premiums.
- Claims history — If you’ve made a claim on your policy or had claims made against you, it may affect your future premiums.
*This price is for a trades and professions policy – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £84.20 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £7.02 a month or £0.23 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary depending on your business requirements.
How may I potentially get a lower insurance quote?
For a chance of securing a lower construction insurance quote, you can take steps that demonstrate lower risk to insurers:
- Improve your safety protocols - Positive risk management controls show underwriters that you know the risks your business could face and taking steps to manage these
- Check and review your cover regularly – As your business grows and changes, ensure you are regularly checking you are paying for only the cover you need
- Choose comprehensive construction insurance – Opt for the right cover types for your needs, without paying of extras you won't use.
- Compare insurance quotes with a broker – Find the right premium for your business needs and compare insurance quotes with a broker who has access to a trusted panel of providers, like us at Bionic.

Do I need employers liability insurance for construction?
If you employ even one person in the UK – including apprentices, part-time staff, or temporary workers – you're legally required to have employers' liability insurance with at least £5 million of cover under the Employers' Liability Act 1969. Not having this cover could result in fines of up to £2,500 for every day you're not insured.
Do you need insurance for apprentices?
If you employ apprentices, you'll need employers' liability insurance by law in the UK.
Apprentices are classed as employees under UK law, so they must be covered by your employers' liability insurance from day one. This includes those on work experience or training schemes.
Can I get cover for materials stored off-site?
Some insurers offer construction insurance that includes cover for materials and equipment stored away from the main construction site, typically up to a specific limit. Check with your broker about off-site storage limits.
