What is...
catering insurance?
Whether you cater for weddings, prepare food for business functions, or run a local food stall, your business activities should be protected. Even if you’re careful, there are always risks that someone could get food poisoning or have an allergic reaction to the food you’ve prepared. That’s why it’s a good idea to have your back covered should the worst ever happen.
Having sufficient cover helps when things go wrong and provides a financial safety net in case someone makes a claim against you or in the event you need to make a claim. Catering insurance protects against unforeseen events and provides peace of mind so you can focus on what’s most important — running your business.
What types of catering businesses need insurance?
We know every catering business is different, but we can help arrange cover for the following businesses:
- Event catering
- Wedding catering
- Social event catering
- Corporate catering
- Buffet catering
- Static food trucks/vans
- Bar services
- Event catering
- Food stalls/market stalls
Is your catering business not listed? Don’t fret — we could still help arrange cover for you. Get in touch with us today and our knowledgeable insurance team will be on hand to help you through the options.
How does catering insurance protect businesses?
Working in kitchens and serving hot food comes with various risks, so it’s important that you have the right cover in place. For example:
- A customer has an allergic reaction to your food or gets food poisoning
- An employee slips, falls or burns themselves and suffers an injury
- An accidental fire breaks out in the kitchen you are using and damages equipment
- A supplier ceases trading and lets you down, meaning you’re unable to operate
Some clients may insist you have the right insurance before starting a job, therefore, it’s essential to have for securing new trade.
What does catering insurance cover?
Policies will vary per provider and you should always refer to your policy wording for details about what is covered. Your package could include:
Employers liability insurance
Public liability insurance
Business equipment insurance

Stock and contents insurance
Product liability insurance
What isn’t covered by catering insurance?
Even if you have sufficient coverage, not all events may not be covered in your policies, including:
- Deliberate events that purposefully lead to illness, injury or damages
- Injuries/damages that happen when travelling outside the UK
- Any contractors or subcontractors you employ. They should have their own insurance in place.
- General wear and tear of equipment
Remember, every insurer is different, and policies vary per provider. Find out what types of cover you need, by starting a quote online today.

FAQs
Do you need insurance for a mobile catering business?
If you have a limited company with employees, it's a legal requirement to have employers' liability insurance as a minimum, even if you work in a mobile vehicle. And if you use a vehicle for business purposes, you’re required to take out vehicle business insurance by law. Unfortunately, we cannot arrange business vehicle insurance at Bionic, but it’s likely we can insure your business activities.
Although not mandatory, it’s also a good idea to have public liability insurance if you’re working at events or in public spaces. This protects the public and your employees in case of injury or damages.
What insurance do you need if you serve alcohol?
If you serve alcohol to customers, it's a good idea to have public liability insurance to protect your business.
This will protect against drunken behaviour on your property including:
- Damage to property
- Injury and accidents
What insurance do you need if you run a catering business from home?
Even if you’re making food at home to sell, you should still consider insurance. Similarly, if you run a food business from the kitchen in your home, it's a good idea to arrange cover. For example, if you cook pizzas at home and deliver them locally, you should consider the following policies:
- Public liability insurance
- Product liability insurance
What about cover for hot food?
As standard, catering insurance comes with public liability insurance which protects you against claims made by customers if you spill hot food over them, causing serious injury or damage to expensive clothing. Make sure to inform your broker or insurer that you serve hot food, so you don’t risk being underinsured.

How much does catering insurance cover cost?
Catering insurance could cost from 23p a day*
Your actual price for catering insurance depends on your requirements. This is because your business is unique, and prices depend on a number of factors, including:
- Extent of cover — The more cover you opt for, the more expensive your package will likely be.
- Your insurer — Depending on who is willing to insure you, the price for their policies will vary.
- Location — The location of your business is taken into consideration when calculating the cost of your premiums.
- Claims history — If you’ve made a previous claim on your policy or had claims made against you, it may affect your future premiums.
*The price is for a trades and professions policy – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £84.20 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £7.02 a month or £0.23 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary on your buisness requirements.
