What is...
bathroom fitter insurance?
When you’re fitting the latest bathroom styles, insurance is probably the last thing on your mind. Bathroom fitter insurance is designed for bathroom installation professionals, whether you’re self-employed or run a small business.
It can help protect you, your business, your employees, and your clients from various risks associated with bathroom fitting work, so you can focus on the job at hand.
Who is covered under bathroom fitter insurance?
We can help the majority of bathroom fitting businesses and sole traders, including:
- Independent bathroom fitters
- Bathroom fitting companies
- Employed bathroom fitters
- Subcontractors (when specified in the policy)
- Apprentices and trainees
- Business partners and employees
Why do bathroom fitters need insurance?
It’s a good idea to consider insurance in case you run into the following:
- You accidentally damage a client’s property
- A client claims your work caused a leak or defect
- Your tools or equipment are stolen from a job site
- A fire or disaster damages your stored stock
- An employee gets injured as a result of their work
- A customer complains about damage caused during installation
If you run your business and have employees, you’ll also need employers’ liability insurance, a legal requirement. If you are self-employed or contracted and work alone, you won’t need this.
What does bathroom fitter insurance cover?
Policies will vary per provider, and terms and conditions apply, so always check the small print in your policy wording to see what’s included and excluded. Your insurance package could include:

Employers’ liability insurance

Public liability insurance

Commercial building insurance

Stock and contents insurance
Tool or machinery insurance
Personal accident cover
What doesn’t it cover?
While your cover can be tailored to your business, you may see the following exclusions:
- Deliberate acts or negligence
- Normal wear and tear
- Undeclared work activities
- Work completed before insurance coverage began
- Claims exceeding policy limits
How much does bathroom fitter insurance cost?
Bathroom fitter insurance could start from 23p a day*
But two insurers are the same, so it’s difficult to give a solid figure for what you might be paying for an annual insurance policy. The following will affect the price of your premiums:
- Extent of cover - The more cover you opt for, the more expensive your package is likely to be.
- Your insurer - The insurer you choose will also influence costs.
- Business activities - The type of services you offer will play a big part in determining the scope of your cover, influencing costs.
- Location – Where you work is taken into consideration when calculating the price of your premiums.
- Claims history - Whether or not you’ve had claims made against you or you have made previous claims may affect your future premiums.
How much you’ll pay annually will depend on a number of factors, including the size of your business, business location, type of policy purchased, coverage limits and previous claims history.
*This price is for a trades and professions policy – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £84.20 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £7.02 a month or £0.23 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary depending on your business requirements.
Do you need separate insurance for apprentices?
If you have apprentices or training fitters who aren’t fully qualified, you must tell your broker
so the right cover can be arranged. Any business that as apprentices will need employers’ liability and need to be included in the number of employees when speaking to a broker.
Keep in mind your cover is only likely to be valid if you stick to the following:
- Apprentices only carry out activities they’ve been professionally trained for
- They should be under regular supervision by someone who is fully qualified
- You tell clients the apprentices are not fully qualified
Please check with your insurer for terms and conditions that you may have to follow.

Is a bathroom fitter the same as a plumber?
While bathroom fitters and plumbers share some skills, they're different professions. Bathroom fitters specialise in complete bathroom installations, including tiling, fitting suites, and coordinating various aspects of bathroom renovation. Plumbers normally focus primarily on water supply, drainage, and heating systems.
